Information
The Reserve is situated on the Yucatan Peninsula, which is an area of limestone bedrock with very little change in elevation and no real surface rivers. The annual rainfall in this area is between 44 and 48 inches, approximately seventy percent of which falls in the rainy season between May and October. Much of the rainfall filters through the sandy soils and limestone bedrock and is contained within an underground aquifer which extends throughout the entire peninsula. A large portion of the Re
serve is wetland areas, which become inundated during the rainy season and contain a superficial, nutrient poor, calciferous topsoil.Other active groups and organizations
The governmental delegation of SEMARNAP of the state of Quintana Roo, the National Institute of Ecology (INE), the National Institute of Archeology and History (INAH), and the Quintana Roo Center of Investigation (CIQRO) are among the organizations working within the reserve. Non-profit and international organizations such as the World Wildlife Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Amigos de Sian Ka’an, and a number of universities are also involved to varying capacities.
